I started my Protective Behaviours journey in 1998 while working for Northamptonshire County Council as a specialist teacher for young people with emotional and behavioural difficulties (this is where I met Simon Sneath).

At the start of this adventure, I had the great fortune to be trained by Di Margetts and I went on to receive more training and input from Di as a Specialist Practitioner, during course observations and co-training events. This meant that, in June 2003, I felt safe and experienced enough to be observed and assessed by experienced Protective Behaviours trainer Fiona Benjamin and gained my endorsement.

I have since gone on to gain qualifications to train Protective Behaviours on 4 day Intermediate/Specialist Practitioner Process into Practice and Train the Trainer courses. I also mentor trainees wishing to become trainers in small groups and one-to-one at home and abroad.

On reflection I realise that the reason I could connect with Protective Behaviours was that I didn't feel safe doing the work I was doing and it would appear that a lot of the young people I was asked to work with and the adults around them had similar feelings. The PB process offers me a robust and consistent framework for understanding how and why people feel, think and behave the way they do. This helps me to develop my practice so people can find ways to feel safe enough to work together, learn from each other and ultimately feel better about themselves.

As well as working as a trainer in Protective Behaviours, I am particularly interested in helping parents and practitioners meet the needs of babies and young children. For this reason I have developed this area within my PB work and made links with other initiatives such as The Northamptonshire Baby Room Project and Hertfordshire's 5 to Thrive - My Baby's Brain initiative. I also work with undergraduate students whose courses involve early childhood. studies. This, for me, is a wonderful opportunity to work with people who are at the start of their career and help them understand how significant their role could be with our youngest citizens. I am keen to find other ways to incorporate Protective Behaviours within degree modules - if you believe you may be able to help with this, please do not hesitate to get in touch!
